"q" is for quotes + BALONEY calligraphy tute

my initial plan for a lot of the letters has changed..
i keep running into something a little better or more worth my time and your time.
i did the same thing with the letter "q" but not because you all would like quotes better than quick hair do's...but because i found some good hair quotes and i figured quick hair do's are swamping the internet anyhow (and i figured out how to sneak a calligraphy lesson in the abc's of hair..HA!)
so you will just have to sit tight with me for this one. q is just one of those dumb letters! some letters are just awkward. what do we do with them! this sign cracks me up about the whole thing:

anyhow, here are some quotes about hair. read 'em. some are pretty good. a couple are pretty funny. BUT!! don't go away yet. i promise something good is going to happen.
(SCROLL PEOPLE, SCROLL!)
forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair. -kahlil gibran
inflation is when you pay fifteen dollars for the ten-dollar haircut you used to get for five dollars when you had hair. -sam ewing
i will never straighten my hair to impress a guy ever again. -taylor swift.
i’d luv to kiss ya, but I just washed my hair. -bette davis
life is an endless struggle full of frustrations and challenges, but eventually you find a hair stylist you like. -unknown

now check out my creativity... i have taken a twist on the abc's of hair series to include a BS calligraphy lesson....i took a hair quote and wrote it in calligraphy (well, my easy version of calligraphy):

now i am going to show you how i did it.... with another hair quote!
likey?

the tools: a fine point sharpie and a calligraphy marker
(or any marker with a flat tip)
start by writing your words as you would normally with the fine tip sharpie.
if you feel more comfortable, use a pencil first.
you can use any type of lettering you want. it doesn't need to be cursive.
switch to your flat tip marker. draw a smooth line down on the long
lines of the letters. if the letter curves, match your flat tip line with the curve,
or add some shorter straight lines.
it should look something like this.
the big thing to remember in calligraphy is line size variation.
you want to have thicker lines and thin lines in each letter.
no letter should have the same line thickness on the letter.
see how it is a little jagged?
we are going to take our fine point sharpie again
and go through to smooth out the lines by connecting
the thick and thin lines seamlessly.
and that's it!
hope you liked it!
i would love to know what you all think about this.
share me some comments!
and show me what you do with this little lesson!

the last giveaway for the abc's of hair series will be announced later today,
or sometime tomorrow.
thanks for being patient!

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love quotes (!!!) & writing them on letters I send people, but even when I try to write neatly, it never turns out as pretty as I'd hoped. This is so easy that I feel stupid for not knowing how to do it myself. I just tried it with only one pen, & even that works well. I'll try to email you a picture later. :) Oh, & that sign with the letter made me laugh boisterously. :)
